📖 Course Overview
The SSI Junior Open Water Diver course is the world's most popular entry-level scuba certification program for young divers. It combines academic learning with practical skill development in a progressive, step-by-step format that's both fun and educational.
Over three exciting days, your child will learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including equipment use, underwater communication, safety procedures, and basic dive planning. All training is conducted in small groups with a low student-to-instructor ratio, ensuring personalized attention and maximum safety.
The course begins with classroom sessions using age-appropriate materials covering dive physics, physiology, equipment, and safety. Young divers learn through engaging videos, interactive discussions, and hands-on demonstrations.
Next comes confined water training in a pool or shallow protected area. Here young divers practice essential scuba skills: equipment assembly, mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control, and underwater communication. Instructors provide patient, encouraging guidance as skills are mastered.
Finally, four open water dives take place in the ocean under direct instructor supervision. These dives apply classroom and pool skills in real-world conditions, with maximum depths of 12 meters (40 feet) for ages 10-11 and 18 meters (60 feet) for ages 12-14.
Upon completion, young divers receive the SSI Junior Open Water Diver certification, allowing them to dive independently with a certified adult buddy. This certification is recognized worldwide and can be upgraded to the full Open Water Diver certification upon turning 15.
