General details about Whaleshark in Sumbawa

🐋 Whale Shark Trip to Teluk Saleh – What to Expect

🌅 Arrival & Orientation

Most trips start from Sumbawa Besar or nearby coastal villages.

  • Meet your guide and crew early (often pre-dawn)

  • Quick briefing on safety + wildlife etiquette

  • You’ll learn how to:

    • Enter the water safely

    • Keep proper distance from whale sharks

    • Avoid disturbing their natural behavior

🚤 Boat Ride to the Whale Shark Area

  • Travel by traditional Indonesian outrigger boat or speedboat

  • Duration: 15 minutes to 1 hour (sometimes longer depending on sightings)

What makes this special:

  • Calm bay waters

  • Sunrise over the ocean 🌄

  • Views of small islands and mountains surrounding Saleh Bay

👀 Spotting Whale Sharks

Whale Shark sightings here are relatively consistent because:

  • The bay is a natural feeding ground

  • Local fishing platforms attract small fish → which attract whale sharks

What you’ll notice:

  • Large shadows moving under the surface

  • Dorsal fins breaking the water

  • Boats gathering in one area (a good sign!)

🤿 Swimming with Whale Sharks

This is the highlight—and it’s unforgettable.

  • You’ll enter the water with:

    • Mask & snorkel

    • Fins

    • Optional life vest

The experience:

  • Whale sharks glide slowly beneath you

  • Some come very close—completely calm and curious

  • Sizes can reach 10–12 meters (it feels surreal in person)

📸 Photography tip:

  • Use wide-angle (GoPro works great)

  • Stay slightly ahead of the shark for the best shots

⚠️ Important Safety & Ethics

This part really matters—for both you and the animals:

  • ❌ Do NOT touch the whale sharks

  • ❌ Do NOT chase or block them

  • ✅ Stay 3–4 meters from the body, farther from the tail

  • ✅ Enter the water calmly (no splashing)

Good operators in Teluk Saleh follow eco-guidelines—worth choosing carefully.

🐠 Marine Life Beyond Whale Sharks

While whale sharks are the main attraction, you might also see:

  • Reef fish in clear waters

  • Turtles 🐢

  • Dolphins 🐬 (occasionally)

  • Coral reefs around the bay

It’s not a hardcore reef-diving destination—but still very rewarding.

⏱️ Trip Duration & Timing

  • Typical trip: 3–5 hours total

  • Best season: April to October (dry season)

  • Best time of day: early morning (calmer water + higher activity)

🏝️ After the Experience

  • Return to shore or homestay

  • Breakfast or rest

  • Continue your journey or head back to Lombok

Many tours are community-run, so your visit directly supports local livelihoods 👍

🌱 Conservation & Reality Check

While this is one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks, there are a few honest points:

  • Sightings are very likely but not guaranteed

  • Some locations involve feeding interactions linked to fishing activity

  • Choose operators that prioritize:

    • Minimal interference

    • No forced feeding

    • Controlled number of swimmers

💡 Extra Things to Do in Sumbawa

If you extend your trip, consider:

  • Surfing at Lakey Peak

  • Visiting traditional villages

  • Exploring quiet, untouched beaches
