π Course Overview
The SSI Night Diving & Limited Visibility Specialty course is an exciting and unique program that opens up a completely new dimension of underwater exploration. Over 1.5 days, you'll complete two night dives while learning specialized techniques for diving in low-light conditions.
The course begins with classroom sessions covering the unique challenges of night diving, including light management, navigation in darkness, nocturnal marine life behavior, and specialized equipment requirements. You'll learn how to properly use primary and backup dive lights, communicate using light signals, and plan night dives considering factors like dusk entries, current changes, and emergency procedures specific to darkness.
During the practical dives, you'll experience the transformation of familiar dive sites as daytime creatures retreat and nocturnal hunters emerge. You'll practice buoyancy control using only light references, navigation using natural and compass methods in darkness, and techniques for maintaining buddy contact in limited visibility. The course also covers limited visibility diving techniques useful for murky water conditions, including silt-out management and touch contact communication.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Night Diving & Limited Visibility Specialty certification. This certification not only allows you to safely conduct night dives worldwide but also builds valuable skills that improve your overall diving confidence and awareness. Night diving often reveals marine life behaviors rarely seen during daylight hours, making this one of the most rewarding specialty courses for adventurous divers.
