📖 Course Overview
The SSI Navigation Specialty Course is one of the most practical and empowering continuing education programs for certified divers. Over 1.5 days, you'll complete two open water dives focused entirely on developing your underwater navigation abilities.
The course begins with classroom sessions covering navigation theory, including compass anatomy and use, natural navigation indicators (sunlight, currents, bottom composition, wave patterns), distance estimation techniques, and how to create mental maps of dive sites. You'll learn to navigate using various patterns including out-and-back, squares, triangles, and more complex routes.
During the practical dives, you'll practice compass navigation by swimming predetermined patterns and returning to starting points. You'll learn to estimate distance using kick cycles and time, combine natural and compass navigation, and navigate to specific landmarks. The course also covers techniques for poor visibility navigation, using guidelines, and navigating with a dive computer.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Navigation Specialty certification. This skill is invaluable for any diver who wants to explore independently, lead dives, or simply feel more confident underwater. Navigation skills also count toward advanced ratings like SSI Master Diver and are essential for professional-level certifications.
